Ahead of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the women’s physiotherapy team at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust are hosting a wellness event in Peterborough on Saturday.
Information on local services and health screening programmes they may need or wish to access throughout their lives will be available.
There will be representation from a host of services such as fertility, maternity, pelvic health, menopause and breast, with information stands, live seminars and practical workshops.
NHS England data from the Breast Screening Programme in 2021-2022 shows that 64.2 per cent of eligible women attended their breast screening within the last three years. This is down from 72.4 per cent data from March 2020.
The number of younger women attending routine cervical cancer screening has also fallen two percentage points since March 2022. NHS England data reveals 60.6 per cent of women in Peterborough, aged 25 to 49, were screened in the fourth quarter of the 2022-2023 reporting year, down from 62.7 per cent in the same period the year prior.
Some communities still face health inequalities and by showcasing local health services, the team are hoping to reduce this and share the message that healthcare is for everyone.
The event will be held on September 30 at the Queensgate Shopping Centre in the old Next store. Women will also have the opportunity to feed back their experiences and concerns with local community groups, Peterborough & Hinchingbrooke Maternity Voices Partnership and The Raham Project.
Liezl Rossouw, advanced clinical practitioner physiotherapist for the Trust, said: “We’re excited to be hosting this event with the support from our breast cancer team.
"Our team is passionate about raising awareness about all aspects of women’s health and hope this event will be a step towards eliminating the stigma and embarrassment about speaking to healthcare professionals about women’s health related issues.
"We hope this event will empower women with knowledge and understanding of their own health and wellbeing.”
