Rimgaudas Roras ditched the BMW at Buckden but all four occupants were out of the vehicle when police arrived.

The 33-year-old, of Crowland Road, Eye, was arrested after giving a roadside reading of 73 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

In custody he blew an evidential sample of 53 microgrammes. The legal limit is 35.

Roras said in interview that he had been heading home from a water park near Milton Keynes.

He claimed he had been “pushed over” by a small car but there had not been a collision – just his vehicle into the bushes.

At Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday, Roras pleaded guilty to drink-driving and told the bench: “I just want to say sorry for what I’ve done.”

He was disqualified from driving for 15 months, which can be cut by 15 weeks with completion of a rehabilitation course.

He was also fined £340 and ordered to pay £139 in costs and victim surcharge.
