Despite the first few months of 2021 locked down, with our Visitor Centre closed and our events programme on hold, we have gone on to have a very exciting year at Nene Park, full of new ventures and developments.
Spring 2021 saw the opening up of our facilities in the Park again including the launch of our regular weekend and holiday boat trips on Wyndham, the electrically-powered passenger boat. Families and friends have enjoyed seeing the Park from a swan’s-eye view on Overton Lake and the River Nene, spotting various wildlife as they travel. Towards the end of the year we launched our specialist wildlife trips with a guided commentary by a member of our knowledgeable team. Find out more about boat trips here.
Our new bell tent campsite, Lakeview, opened for the first time in May and proved very popular with campers throughout the summer. We have eight bell tents pitched on the shores of Gunwade Lake, which can be hired individually or together as a group booking.
Our pitch-only site, The Glade, has also been well used as families have enjoyed holidaying closer to home this year. Find out more about what’s on offer and about booking for the 2022 summer season here.
We also opened our new Lakeside Farm Shop in early summer, showcasing local growers, producers and suppliers, including our very own farm partners on the Nene Park Rural Estate. This December we sold our first lamb boxes from lamb reared on Nene Park land. Find out more about our Park to Plate lamb box scheme here and look out for the next ordering dates in January and then monthly throughout 2022.
The team at Nene Outdoors Watersports and Activity Centre were rushed off their feet throughout the summer months, with our Pay and Play activities and other summer activities proving as popular as ever, especially with many people staying closer to home this year.
Our new online booking system made the booking process simpler for both visitors and staff and everyone enjoyed getting out on the water or exploring the wider Park.
We received the fantastic news in July that we had been successful in our funding bid with the National Lottery Heritage Fund for our five-year project Your Community Greenspace.
This project will bring a host of infrastructure improvements to the Park including the replacement of Pontoon Bridge and a newly designed welcome area to Ferry Meadows. There will also be an extensive events programme and community projects that will respond to the growth of Peterborough and the region. Take a look at information about the project here and keep your eyes out for further news about developments in 2022.
Autumn saw the opening of Fox Play, our newest play area in Ferry Meadows, which offers our young visitors plenty of new opportunities to climb, swing, slide, splash and explore in a natural setting. Do come and visit if you haven’t been yet and find out more about the project development here.
Finally, we enter the winter season with plenty of seasonal shopping opportunities at our Visitor Centre and Farm shop, festive activities such as our Christmas holiday trail and most importantly the Park remaining a haven for our visitors for fresh air, exercise, social contact and relaxation.
We are very grateful to all our visitors for their support to Nene Park Trust this year and look forward to welcoming you all again in 2022.
