Police were informed about Thomas Garner, 52, who had been spotted buying alcohol at Spar in Hampton Court, Westwood.
CCTV images tracked his Ford Transit to Woolaston Road where it was pulled over.
At Peterborough Magistrates’ Court yesterday (July 12), prosecutor Priscilla Afful-Mensah said: “Two white males have left the van and run away but Mr Garner remained with the vehicle.”
He failed a roadside breath test and was arrested, later blowing 51 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.
Garner, of Brookfurlong, Ravensthorpe, pleaded guilty to drink-driving on June 10.
Michelle Canagasarium, mitigating, said: “He had two bottles of beer and didn’t realise he would be over the limit. He says if he had thought that, he wouldn’t have driven.”
Garner was disqualified from driving for 14 months, which can be cut with the completion of a drink-driver rehabilitation course.
He was fined £207 and ordered to pay £105 costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
