Dome comforts for Posh as Academy aims for new training pitch

A new dome-covered training pitch and facilities for aspiring Posh players and the community could be on the cards if a plan is approved.
The site where the new academy dome will be

In new proposals submitted to Peterborough City Council a new dome covered pitch for Peterborough United Football Club Training Academy will be built at the academy's current site at Nene Park Academy, where it has been shared for 15 years.

The proposal had originally been intended for March 2020, but the Covid pandemic and an abrupt curtailment of sports led to it being put back on hold.

With football now back  - albeit minus fans - the plan has now been officially submitted, at a time when Posh are currently in the process of agreeing a 25 year lease with the Trust that runs the school, Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust.

If accepted a covered 3G 60yards by 40 yards pitch will be covered by a 63 metres by 45 metres double layer skin air dome, of a height of 11 metres at the highest point.

In addition the lakeside building will be demolished to extend the existing car park facilities.

The application document prepared by P and R Architects states: "The Academy is home to players at PUFC from the 1st Team down to youth teams at all levels, in addition to providing school and community use to the wider general public.

"The Academy facilities currently include a number of retained facilities from the original school which provide changing, education and administration space. Externally there are 3 full size pitches, training grids and a goalkeeping area.

"The success of the Academy and close links with the school has led to the desire to achieve EFL (2019-2020) Academy level 2 status which will require a number of additional facilities not currently provided by the Academy.

"The proposals that therefore form part of this application include the provision of a covered pitch and additional changing, educational and administration facilities.

"The requirements have been developed with PUFC and specifically the Academy Manager Kieran Scarff and in close consultation with the school and Peterborough City Council."

The application for the covered pitch and associated facilities is being made as Posh challenge for League One promotion, with the club already being awarded Cat 2 Academy status

In addition, a second outline application for a Futsal pitch on the remaining part of the site has been put on hold and may be applied for in the future .

The application adds: "As part of the proposals, it has been agreed that school and community use will be extended to the new facilities, not only with the use of the pitches but changing facilities, teaching spaces etc.

"It is proposed that the facilities will be available on a daily basis between 9.00am and 3.00pm with additional hours during the evenings and weekend afternoons extending the current use of the clubs facilities by the school teams, the junior and senior academy players, girls and ladies teams including use for disabled people.

"In addition Health and Well being strategies will provide for adults and children alike."
