Construction underway for two new schools in Paston

Construction work is under way on two new schools which will accommodate 1300 pupils in the Paston Reserve area of Peterborough.

The council, assisted by its technical advisers Rider Levett Bucknall, appointed Wates to undertake the construction of Manor Drive Primary and Secondary schools on land at Paston Reserve after planning permission was granted in October 2020, following a public consultation.

The initial enabling phase of work started earlier this year preparing the site for construction. Peterborough City Council have now entered into the main building contract with Wates to progress the works so that the school buildings can be constructed, along with associated playing fields, landscaping, car parking and external works.

The schools are set to open in September 2022, providing at capacity 900 secondary places, 420 primary places and 26 nursery places.

Plans for the schools were first announced back in 2019 after the 4Cs academy trust, with support from Peterborough City Council, was successful in bidding for funding from the Department for Education (DfE) for Manor Drive Secondary as part of wave 13 of the free schools programme. This followed the trust’s successful bid for Manor Drive Primary in wave 12.

Councillor John Holdich, leader of Peterborough City Council, said: “Peterborough is one of the fastest growing cities in the UK and we expect this trend to continue, so finding new school places is an urgent and ongoing challenge.

“This project is several years in the making so we’re delighted that work on the schools is now under way. I’m looking forward to seeing the work progress and the schools open their doors next year, which will be a fantastic occasion. They are going to be huge assets not just for Paston, but for Peterborough as a whole, for years to come.”

A spokesperson for the 4Cs academy trust said: “We are delighted that building is underway and we look forward to welcoming our first groups of children in September 2022.  The Manor Drive schools are a flagship project for the 4C’s MAT and have been designed to facilitate a dynamic learning environment.”

Stuart Cleworth, Director of Wates, said: “We are delighted to be delivering this exciting scheme in partnership with Peterborough City Council and the 4Cs academy trust which will further enhance the educational offering within this area of the city.

“Our vast knowledge and experience of delivering high quality, innovative and sustainable education buildings throughout the country will allow us to be an integral part of the process to provide the facilities for future generations to reach their full potential.”
