Winning start to season for Peterborough Girls Rugby

Last weekend saw a successful start to the season for the girls' section at Peterborough Rugby Club - eight months after the first game should have been played.

All three teams were playing their first proper matches of the season, away at the Kesteven club, just outside Grantham, and all three came home with victories.

A 49-5 win for the under-18s saw ‘V’ Silva Seide and Mia Gilbert both scoring twice, with single tries from Abbie Sullivan, Charlotte Fosbeary, Cody Youngman, Leah Lilley and Holley Ross, who also kicked two conversions despite the windy conditions.

The under-15s were made to work hard for their 30-25 success, with Livvy Buchanan clinching the victory with her second try of the match in the last few seconds of the game. Alice Bennett had earlier scored twice and Molly Rain and Zara Mansfield took one try apiece.

Ava Collett scored the opening try on her debut, as the under-13 girls completely dominated their hosts, crossing over the line to score at least 20 tries while conceding just two.

After the matches, team manager Simon Potter said: "In many ways, the results were immaterial. It was terrific just to be able to play again after the interruptions of Covid and fantastic to see how well the girls, of all three age groups, played."

This weekend brings home action against Towcester before matches with Old Northamptonians, Market Harborough and Ampthill wrap up the extended season.

Preparations for the new season will begin at the end of July, when some Premiership players from Loughborough Lightning will be coming to Peterborough for a training session with the girls.
