Posh miss out on Wembley semi-final after trophy loss to Tranmere

Posh have missed out on a trip to Wembley after losing 2-1 to Tranmere Rovers in the Papa John's Trophy quarter-finals.
Jonson Clarke-Harris' conversion from the spot wasn't enough to keep Posh in the trophy hunt

There were plenty of shots on goal, but Peterborough United left Merseysidehaving fallen out of the cup after the Sky Bet League Two side held onto the lead they took in the first half.

Darren Ferguson's men slipped to a 1-0 defeat from a Rovers free kick on 37 minutes, with Danny Lloyd firing it through the wall and into the net.

After the break, a triple change for Posh piled the pressure onto the home team - with Sammie Szmodics and Joe Ward testing the Tranmere keeper - but a counterattack from Rovers brought them a second goal on 82 minutes, and gave Peterborough a mountain to climb.

A penalty in the 90th minute was given Posh's way, after Otis Khan felled Mo Eisa in the area, and Jonson Clarke-Harris coolly converted. That last-chance goal to take the game to a penalty shootout never came, however - despite a late shot from Ward - and Peterborough's trophy run came to an end at Prenton Park.

It won't be a confidence boost for Ferguson's side, who also lost in League One on Saturday, but it does mean two fewer matches to fit into an already packed end of season for the Posh.

In the league, they currently sit fifth, with 24 games played.
