The stalls are spread over a wide area within the cathedral to allow plenty of room for social distancing, and the familiar rules of wearing a face covering sanitising hands on entry and exit, and following a strict one way system are in place.

Among the unique range of gifts and hand crafted items on sale are woven items using recycled materials, soya wax candles, appliqué cushions and other fabric items.

The beautiful cathedral interior is an inspiring space in which to do some Christmas shopping and this year, due to extended opening hours and timed entry to manage the flow of visitors, it promises to be a calming experience too, without a jostling crowd.

This year, due to the pandemic, shoppers are asked to book a timed ticket online before they come so that overcrowding is avoided. Entry is £2 per person, with under 16s free of charge (booking still required).

The market is open until 5pm and then again from 7pm to 9pm today, and then 10am to 5pm tomorrow (Saturday, December 5).
