Writing on social media, the business said: “After 97 years we have decided to close down the business of J W D'Arcy Ltd, put down our loupes and pull down the shutters.”
In a further comment the owners said the decision was made based on the terms of the business’s lease and how it is currently performing.
J.W. D'Arcy will be closed today and Friday to prepare for a closing down sale beginning Saturday, July 3. The repair service will still be provided.
The news was met with sadness from Peterborough residents who had purchased jewellery for many special occasions – particularly wedding and engagement rings – from the retailer.
Although the jewellery shop on the site in Westgate was opened in 1855, J.W. D’Arcy was established in Peterborough in 1923 and has continued to be a family-run business through four generations.
The shop reopened after the most recent Covid-19 lockdown on Monday, April 12.
