Although it officially closed in October due to Covid-19 restrictions; writing on their Facebook page the team said: "Unfortunately due to increase government restrictions we have had no choice but to close The Solstice until further notice.”

The venue thanked the people of the city for their support over the last 23 years. Following the announcement, building owners MPB Structures announced their plans to demolish the venue and convert it into student accommodation to support the upcoming city university, in conjunction with the Northminster regeneration plans revealed earlier this month.

But in recent developments, the venue management - Woodglen Leisure Limited submitted an application for a new premises license on Thursday (August 19).

They have requested it come into force from September 10 this year.

Additionally, the application has also requested the venue stay open from 8am to 4am indoors and asked for permission to carry out outdoor entertainment until 11pm each day of the week.

Permission was granted in February this year to demolish the building and convert it into a seven-storey tower plus a secondary three-storey block offering a combined 56 apartments, with restaurants and/or retails units on the ground floor- with an aim to provide student accommodation.

Documents released on February 23, confirm that the proposal has been permitted with prior approval by Peterborough City Council (PCC), subject to the demolition taking place in the next five years.

Speaking at the time, a spokesperson from MPB Structures, who own the building, said at the time: "The council's Local Plan for Northminster has made it difficult for the club to operate, with critical paths and roads being closed preventing access to our venue, demolition works ongoing, and general lack of investment in the Northminster area for the past 20 years.

"As a local family and business, we are committed to leading the much-needed regeneration of this area.

"We are very proud of Peterborough and what we have achieved here. Solstice has been an important and successful part of Peterborough's leisure scene for many years and we thank all our loyal customers for their support. Our proposal to invest in creating student accommodation at this site is a clear demonstration of the private sector’s confidence in the success of the new University.

"This is an ideal place for students to live and we believe the new look buildings will significantly add to the overall regeneration of this area, including the local green space at Stanley Recreation Ground. Together with the new apartments and commercial units, it will breathe new life into this part of the city centre.

"We appreciate that many local people will have wonderful memories of the club and this is a new beginning, we want the Solstice brand to continue and to support the new university, and we will be looking at how we meet changing leisure patterns."
