Peterborough families encouraged to take on the Big Pedal challenge

Dame Sarah Storey, Ambassador for Big Pedal 2020, looks forward to seeing schools take up the challenge.

Big Pedal 2020 will take place from April 22 to May 5 and is all about encouraging children and young people to choose walking, cycling, or scooting to make their journeys. Sustrans, the walking and cycling charity behind the competition, has been working with schools in Peterborough since 2011 to get parents, teachers and pupils thinking about sustainable travel.

Matt Easter, the England Director for Midlands and East at Sustrans, said: "With the climate crisis in the forefront of pupils and parents minds, campaigns like the Big Pedal are a fun way for us to reduce carbon by walking or cycling to school and make a real difference to our local environment – from less congested streets to better air quality."

Last year, twenty-four schools from the city took part in the challenge and finished the two weeks having travelled 252,610 miles by foot, bike, or scooter. That's equivalent to ten trips around the world – surely our young people of Peterborough can take it to eleven for 2020!
