Schoolchildren have come together to show support for young people affected by war overseas.

Year 6 pupils at Ravensthorpe Primary Academy in Peterborough helped prepare and label boxes of donated school uniforms for Ukrainian children, for distribution through the local community group Helping Our Ukrainian Friends.

The children, including members of the newly elected school council, also wrote personal messages for the recipients.

Katie Starkey, attendance officer at Ravensthorpe Academy, said: "It’s incredible to see our children engage so thoughtfully and compassionately with a cause that affects so many young lives.

"Their messages and contributions will bring comfort and a sense of connection to children in Ukraine."

The boxes were for distribution through the local community group Helping Our Ukrainian Friends.

Bob Bennett, from Helping Our Ukrainian Friends, explained that while they had to stop accepting general clothing due to overwhelming amounts of donations, they were thrilled to receive the donation of high-quality, unused uniforms which will be put to good use.

A teacher at the school, Mrs Bell, who is originally from Ukraine, translated the children’s messages.

She said it was a moving experience for both the pupils and herself to see the direct impact of their generosity.

The school is part of the Keys Academies Trust in Peterborough.

The uniforms will be distributed through the local community group Helping Our Ukrainian Friends.
