On Friday, November 21, a group of children took on jobs and responsibilities usually handled by adults at Peterborough Museum.

This was part of the Kids in Museums Takeover Day, an initiative across England aimed at giving young people meaningful roles in the heritage sector.

Children from all over England took part in the annual event, launched in 2010 by the charity Kids in Museums, and supported by Arts Council England.

More than 45,000 children and young people have participated since its inception.

The day coincides with Discover! Creative Careers Month, a programme designed to inspire those aged 11 to 18 to explore opportunities within the creative industries.

Thirty Year 7 students from St John Fisher Catholic High School were among those who stepped into the shoes of museum staff.

They were responsible for creating visitor tours, learning how to care for and conserve the collections, designing exhibition posters, and supporting on reception.

They were also joined by Lydia Baldwin, senior creative cultures leader at Peterborough Cultural Alliance, who provided an insight into careers in the creative industries.

Mercy Wilson, museum learning coordinator, said: "It is always inspiring to welcome young people into the museum.

"We can learn as much from them as they do from us.

"We were thrilled that St John Fisher wanted to take part, and hope they left with new skills, fresh ideas about future careers, and motivation to come back as a visitor."

One pupil described their day as "amazing, fun and life-changing."

Others expressed enthusiasm to return as visitors, volunteers, or for future events.

The museum said the success of its work experience programme in recent years has resulted in several participants returning as volunteers.
