Eighty apartments offering specialist housing for older people have officially opened at a new later-living development in Peterborough.

Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit provider of specialist housing for older people, unveiled The Brambles this week, with the opening attended by new residents, staff as well as representatives from Deeley Construction, Peterborough City Council and Homes England.

The development is in Hampton, at Silver Hill, and is designed exclusively for people aged over 60.

The Brambles includes 80 apartments in total, made up of 56 one and two-bedroom social rent homes and 24 two-bedroom Older Persons Shared Ownership apartments.

Anchor said the development has proved popular, with all of the shared ownership homes reserved before the official opening.

Residents have access to a lounge, kitchen, library, activity room, guest suite and landscaped communal gardens, while each apartment also has its own private patio or balcony.

Anchor says the homes have been built with sustainability in mind, including underfloor heating and air source heat pumps.

James Chatt-Collins, director of sales at Anchor, said: “The Brambles has been thoughtfully designed to support independent living in later life, providing residents with access to modern shared spaces and amenities.”

He added that the early demand for the homes reflected the need for high-quality affordable housing for older people.

Martin Gallagher, managing director at Deeley Construction, said it had been “fantastic” to work with Anchor on its first scheme together and described the apartments as high-quality affordable homes for people in Hampton.

He said the two organisations had worked closely from the outset to deliver a sustainable scheme that would provide efficient homes for residents.

Councillor Neil Boyce, Peterborough City Council’s cabinet member for adult social care, said the impact of poor housing on mental and physical health “can’t be underestimated”.

He described The Brambles as a “prime example” of the city’s efforts to provide comfortable, high-quality housing.
