£1 million has been allocated by councillors to help repair road surfaces in Peterborough.
The works, to be carried out by the council’s highways partner M Group, aim to repair and treat road surfaces damaged by recent extreme weather.
Funding for the scheme was included in the council’s 2026/27 budget.
Councillor Angus Ellis, cabinet member for transport at Peterborough City Council, said: "Extreme weather is having a major effect on the condition of our highway surfaces.
"The biggest impact is on our rural road network where extremely dry conditions cause large cracks in the road surface.
"Over time the cracks become wider and deeper and gradually the road surface starts to fall away from the centre of the carriageway."
The council said prolonged periods of dry weather and high temperatures have caused deterioration in road surfaces.
The bitumen in asphalt softens in the heat and becomes brittle as it cools, making the surface more prone to cracking during winter.
Cllr Ellis said it was vital to act now to avoid future disruption.
He said: "By agreeing this positive programme of works, we will help ensure that our highways are in an excellent condition for all road users and prevent key routes having to close in future."
M Group has worked on major highways schemes for the council since 2013 and was awarded a five-year contract extension in October 2023.
