A parents’ group has launched an appeal to help buy portable air conditioning units for every classroom at Holme school after describing this week’s temperatures as “unbearable” for children.

Amanda Rose, who is fundraising for Friends of Holme School (FOHS), said the recent heat has left pupils struggling in lessons and warned that periods of extreme temperatures like this are likely to become more common.

She said the school needs extra support to keep classrooms comfortable and safe during hot weather.

FOHS already has money set aside to go towards portable air conditioning units, but the group says it must now “supercharge” its fundraising efforts if it is to afford one for each class, and has launched a GoFundMe appeal.

Amanda said many parents have already told her they would be willing to contribute specifically towards cooling the school.

She is now urging the wider community to get behind the appeal and donate whatever they can, stressing that every contribution will help towards making a difference for the children.

The fundraiser has passed its initial target of £1,000, and is on its way to the next target of £2,000, to help kit out classrooms with the new units.
