Young minds took centre stage in a challenge designed to spark the next generation of engineers.

In Peterborough, students designed, built, and raced their own electric vehicles as part of a hands-on STEM learning programme supported by Perkins Engines, one of the city's largest employers.

The Greenpower Education Trust event is designed to inspire interest in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) by turning classroom concepts into real-world engineering challenges.

Mark Wren, engineering manager at Perkins Engines Company Ltd and lead for the Greenpower Goblin Race Day initiative, said: "Events like Greenpower give young people the opportunity to experience engineering in an accessible and engaging way.

"It's fantastic to see the creativity, teamwork, and determination that the students have demonstrated throughout the programme."

Perkins volunteers acted as STEM ambassadors and mentors, guiding school teams through the design and build process and giving them practical insight into potential engineering careers.

Mr Wren said: "Our volunteers have worked closely with schools over recent months, helping students turn their ideas into reality and giving them a glimpse of the exciting opportunities that a career in engineering can offer.

"At Perkins, we're passionate about inspiring the next generation of engineers and problem-solvers.

"Seeing these young people apply STEM skills, build confidence, and take pride in their achievements makes events like this incredibly rewarding for all the volunteers involved."
