Residents are taking the lead in making their roads safer by tackling speeding head-on.
In Cambridgeshire, more than 1,000 volunteers are involved in the Community Speedwatch scheme, which aims to reduce speeding and promote safer driving through community action and support from the police.
Central to the scheme’s success is Julie Clark, the force-wide Watch Coordination Officer, who has dedicated nearly two years to supporting volunteers, coordinating schemes, and addressing community concerns.
Ms Clark said: "Being part of the Vision Zero initiative means so much.
"To be given joint responsibility with my team to help reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on Cambridgeshire's roads is a privilege.
"I am so grateful to members of the community who volunteer their free time to help keep Cambridgeshire's roads safe."
Community Speedwatch now operates in 113 groups across the county, with four additional HGV Watch schemes.
Trained volunteers monitor vehicle speeds and gather data in areas where speeding is a concern.
Their work contributes to educating drivers and providing valuable information to police and road safety partners.
Police and Crime Commissioner Darryl Preston, who chairs the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Vision Zero Partnership, said: "Every death or serious injury on our roads is one too many.
"Community Speedwatch demonstrates what can be achieved when local people, volunteers, and partner organisations work together towards a common goal.
"Julie’s passion and commitment, alongside the incredible dedication shown by our volunteers, is helping create safer roads across Cambridgeshire.
"As chair of the Vision Zero board, I remain committed to investing in practical initiatives that educate drivers, reduce speeding, and ultimately save lives."
The initiative is supported by the commissioner’s Vision Zero safety vans, which serve as a visible deterrent and reinforce the importance of driving safely.
