A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms could bring a risk of flooding and disruption to Cambridgeshire this week.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms between 3am and 10pm on Wednesday August 26, warning of a small risk of flooding and disruption.

Heavy rain, lightning, and hail are possible, with a risk of flash flooding in some areas.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are among the areas in the East of England which could be affected.

The Met Office said: "A band of heavy showers and thunderstorms is expected to move northwards on Wednesday morning.

"A drier, brighter interlude may follow, but with a chance of further showers and thunderstorms breaking out during the afternoon.

"Many places will miss these, but where they do occur they may be intense with 20-30 mm rain falling in less than an hour and perhaps 40-50mm in 2-3 hours in a few spots, leading to some surface water flooding.

"Large hail and frequent lightning are also possible.

"The showers and thunderstorms will drift northwards and ease during the evening."

There is a small chance of sudden flooding affecting homes and businesses, potentially causing damage from floodwater, lightning, or hail.

During thunderstorms, the safest option is to seek shelter in an enclosed space such as a car, avoiding trees and other tall structures.

Those in exposed or elevated areas should move to lower ground.

Weather warnings may change quickly, so residents are advised to monitor updates throughout the day.
