Peterborough Rugby Club were honoured to be one of only ten UK rugby clubs to host the Wounded Lions 500, a group of ex-international Rugby Players, who embarked on a 48 hour Cycle Challenge, carrying the match ball for the recent Scotland v England Rugby Match.
The cyclists led by Rob Wainwright (Scotland) John Hall (England) and Paddy Johns (Ireland) arrived at Fengate late on Thursday evening to refuel and rest, as well as collect a cheque for £750.00.
The group were riding in support of Doddie Weir and Tom Smith, both of whom were on the 1997 British Lions tour of South Africa, but have recently fallen into ill health. Weir has MND and Smith has advanced cancer.
The money was raised by a bucket collection with the members and supporters of Peterborough Rugby Club, Peterborough Lions and the patrons of The Paper Mills and Cross Keys pubs in Wansford.
It was a special night for PRUFC legend Harry Facer who has been battling MND for a number of years. Harry presented the cheque and chatted with some of the participants.
