Sir Mark Prescott paid tribute to his star mare Tiffany after she rounded off her career on the track with a fine effort at the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday.
After filling the runner-up spot in three Group Ones on German soil, the Elite Racing-owned six-year-old finally broke her top-level duck in the Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten in early August and followed up with a Grade Two success in the Kentucky Turf Cup in America, earning her a shot at the Breeders’ Cup.
With a date in the sales ring looming, the Breeders’ Cup Turf was picked as the stage for Tiffany’s swansong and she did her connections proud, beaten just two and a half lengths into fourth place by Aidan O’Brien’s Benvenuto Cellini at Keeneland.
“It was her last run and mathematically the best run of her life, so I have to say I’m very relieved and delighted,” Prescott told the Press Association.
“I thought it looked a hotter Breeders’ Cup Turf than last year, I think that was proved to be the case and she couldn’t have run much better really, could she? She couldn’t be expected to run much better than that.
“I think Ryan Moore had a bit of magic weaving through on the winner, but our horse was drawn wider (stall nine) and I think (Luke) Morris could hardly have had our mare better placed. Ryan got a lovely run and that plays a bit of a part in it, but Morris made sure the draw was at least as inconvenient as it could be.”
Tiffany will now head back to the December Mares Sale at Tattersalls, where she went through the ring unsold at one million guineas last year after failing to make her reserve.
However, with a Group One win now on he record, Prescott hopes it will be a different story this time around.
“You’d be surprised if she didn’t make it (her reserve) because having won that Group One and that valuable race in Kentucky, she’s a good bit more sexy now than she was last year,” the Newmarket handler added.
“Against that of course is that whoever was to buy her is going to have one less foal from her, so it’s a balance, but you would think she’ll make the money this time.”
